Reducing our waste and growing our own lunch!

Living on Quadra Island - a beautiful green environment - we are always looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage we produce. The project we initiated in October 2008 involves reducing the amount of garbage created by our Friday lunch program. In the past our meals were served in stryrofoam bowls and we ate with plastic utensils. Our Principle, Mr. Boyd, agreed to purchase real bowls and cutlery for our weekly lunch. Since October we have prevented over 550 styrofoam bowls, plastic lids and forks from being shipped off island to the landfill. The Green & Clean Quadra team, a group of dedicated grade 3 students, all take turns collecting and washing all the dishes. Now if we could just buy a dishwasher then we could reduce the water we waste when we hand wash all those dishes! Our favourite Friday lunch is the Caesar Salad. The lettuce often travels a very long way to get to our bowls. To reduce our "food miles" this spring, with the help of some local gardeners, we are going to grow our lunch. We anticipate a delicious locally grown lunch for our end of year celebration.
